Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate between the roles of mediation and therapy: Participants will understand the distinct goals, processes, and focus of mediation and therapy in the context of divorce. They will be able to articulate the benefits of each approach individually.
- Utilize therapeutic techniques to empower clients during the divorce process: Participants will recognize through role play exercises as therapists the importance of providing support, guidance, and empowering their clients through the divorce process.
- Develop skills in offering emotional support, assisting clients in setting goals, and helping them make informed decisions aligned with their values and needs.

- Introduction and Overview (15 minutes)
Welcome and introductions
Brief explanation of divorce mediation
Overview of the class objectives and agenda
2. Understanding the Roles of Mediation and Therapist (30 minutes)
What a mediator’s role is vs what a therapists role is
Discuss the difference between divorce mediation and therapy: goals, processes, and focus
Exploring how the distinct roles of mediators and therapists can individually support clients
Discussing the benefits of a client having both mediation and therapy as resources during the divorce process.
3. Role Play: (30 minutes)
Participants divided into pairs of 4
Each group will have a mediator, therapist, and 2 clients. Following prompts according to their roles.
Participants will notice the different styles and benefits of each role and how they are suitable for each situation.
The mediation process, focusing on effective communication and conflict resolution techniques
The therapeutic process, focusing on emotional support, goal setting, and decision-making assistance
4. Children in Divorce (1 hour)
- Empowering Clients through Integrated Support (15 minutes)
Reflecting on the role play experiences and discussing the difference between mediation and therapy as resources for clients.
Highlighting strategies to empower clients individually, such as providing emotional support, facilitating effective communication, and assisting in decision-making
Analyzing case studies that highlight the benefits of clients having access to both mediation and therapy
- Conclusion and Action Plan (15 minutes)
Summarizing key takeaways from the class
Encouraging participants to share insights and experiences related to empowering clients in divorce mediation
Participants reflect on their learnings and identify actionable steps for clients participating in mediation
Emphasizing the importance of ongoing professional development and support in this integrated approach
