This training session, Counseling Black Women, focuses on helping mental health professionals develop culturally humble strategies for working with Black women. The session begins with an introduction to the concept of cultural humility and a discussion of attendees' initial thoughts and expectations for the training. Participants will explore common challenges Black women face, such as navigating societal pressures and stereotypes, and discuss how these issues influence mental health. Attendees will engage in reflective exercises designed to increase self-awareness, particularly regarding power and privilege in the therapeutic relationship. Through group discussions and interactive activities, the session aims to equip participants with the tools necessary to provide culturally responsive care that honors the unique lived experiences of Black women. The training concludes with a review of key takeaways and how participants can apply these insights to their future counseling work.
Qualifications:
Kimberly Parker (she/her) is the CEO of Revive to Thrive Wellness Center, a Texas-based practice. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC), and Transformative Coach, she specializes in trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, and life transitions. Kimberly is committed to culturally humble care, empowering individuals and addressing the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. Currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES), she also serves as an instructor, clinical supervisor, and trainer focused on cultural humility.
Learning Objectives:
- Increase knowledge on presenting concerns for Black women.
- Increase knowledge on stigmas and stereotypes for Black women.
- Increase knowledge regarding counseling experiences of Black women.
- Increase knowledge effective and necessary interventions for Black women.
- Increase knowledge on the beginning steps of becoming culturally humble.
Agenda:
Introduction (30 minutes)
Introduce myself
Inform attendees that the training will be recorded and explain the reason for recording.
Introduce the topic for the day: Counseling Black Women.
Ask attendees to introduce themselves by sharing their names, areas of interest, and initial thoughts on "counseling Black women."
Encourage attendees to share what they hope to learn during the session.
Provide a disclaimer regarding potential triggers in the discussion.
Ice Breaker (10 minutes)
Presentation (50 minutes)
Review the PowerPoint presentation on Counseling Black Women.
Break (15 minutes)
Take a short break.
Documentary Viewing (35 minutes)
Watch Recipe for Change: Amplifying Black Women featuring Mary J. Blige, Saweetie, and Tabitha Brown (start at 8:42 and end at 45 minutes).
Documentary Follow-up (10 minutes)
Allow time for questions and comments about the documentary.
Reflection & Activity (20 minutes)
Share a Power Flower with the attendees and guide them to create their own.
Facilitate a discussion about power, privilege, and what to consider when working with Black women.
Closing Activity (10 minutes)
Attendees will share their main takeaway from today’s training and one action they plan to implement in their future work with Black women.
