Whether you have read emerging research on the topic, stumbled across trending videos on Tik Tok, or learned from listening to your clients, chances are that you’ve heard the term neurodiversity. But what is that exactly? This training will explore the current shift from conventional perspectives on neurodevelopmental diagnoses to the neurodiverse-affirming approach which looks at brain differences as naturally occurring and worthy of inclusion and recognition.
We will primarily focus our discussion on the topic of autism, and we will discuss the research supporting this shift in how we view autism, the language we use, and how to work with and support autistic clients.

- Define neurodiversity and discuss the neurodiversity movement/approach.
- Summarize the research supporting a neurodiversity perspective.
- Discuss strategies for applying a neurodiverse-affirming approach to working with autistic individuals.
Agenda:
8:00 – 8:15am Introduction and Learning Objectives
8:15 – 8:45am Discuss the history of various types of neurodivergence (autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) Focus on history of autism.
8:45 – 9:15am Provide overview of neurodiversity movement/approach. Discuss research on this approach.
9:15 – 9:30am Explore how to integrate an intersectional framework in understanding autistic experiences, as they are influenced by social/cultural/personal factors.
9:30 – 10:00am Examine the relationship between neurodivergence and trauma and discuss potential considerations when working with autistic clients.
10:00 – 10:30am Elaborate on neurodiverse-affirming language and strategies when working with autistic clients.
10:30 – 11:00am Review neurodiverse-affirming resources to utilize within clinical practice.
