Webinar Description
Part One
Introduction To Paradox Psychology:
It’s Not What You Think…
Subject of the course: Paradoxical Interventions – Theory and Practice
Research indicates that Paradoxical Interventions (pdxi) have a higher rate of success with treatment-resistant clients than behavioral, cognitive, and psychodynamic approaches. This training will explore the theory and practice of pdxi as well as treatment techniques designed to promote change. Participants are encouraged to bring in questions and cases of their own.
Learning Objectives:
1)To offer a scientific model that diagrams the concept of change;
2)Recognize how ‘joining’ and ‘avoiding power struggles’ are
significant factors in bypassing treatment resistance.
3)To understand how and why treating secondary and non-criminal behavior
symptoms (ie. anger, poor social skills, low self-esteem, etc.) will have a positive
impact on primary targeted aggressive and violent behaviors.
Part Two
Treatment Interventions in Paradox Psychology:
**No Sarcasm Allowed**
Subject of the course: Paradoxical Interventions – Theory and Practice
Paradoxical Interventions (pdxi) have a higher rate of success with treatment-resistant clients than behavioral, cognitive, and psychodynamic approaches. This training will explore numerous treatment interventions and discuss how the underlying ‘active ingredient’ is the same. Interventions that will be discussed include: Prescribing the symptom, Scheduling and planning the symptom, Exaggerating the symptom, and Contracting for success. Participants are encouraged
to bring in questions and cases of their own.
Learning Objectives:
1) Recognize how ‘joining’ and ‘avoiding power struggles’ are significant factors in bypassing treatment resistance.
2) Discuss 5 types of paradoxical interventions and what they have in common.
3) To understand how and why it is possible to treat secondary behavior symptoms and still have a positive impact on primary targeted, but hard to reach - behaviors.
Part Three
Paradox Intervention LIVE! :
Videoed Intervention and AnalysisTo Paradox Psychology:
Subject of the course: Paradoxical Interventions – Theory and Practice
Training will discuss and analyze a LIVE 3 session intervention addressing anti-social behavior with treatment-resistant juveniles at a residential facility. Techniques utilized and reactions of the boys will be reviewed. Research indicates the method has a higher rate of success in addressing treatment-resistance than behavioral, cognitive, and psychodynamic approaches
Learning Objectives
1) To offer a treatment model that supports counter-intuitive ‘joining’;
2) Recognize how the use of non-confrontational techniques and ‘unconditional positive regard’ are significant factors toward influencing change.
3) To understand how impulse control, self-esteem, and free will are important factors toward positive change and long-term growth.
