Supervisors are essential to the practice of mental health, but the supervisor’s role is a complicated one. Ethical considerations for supervisors can be very different from that of their supervisees. This training will explore the unique ethical considerations of supervisors, with special attention to the complications the supervisory role brings to boundaries. This course will provide a framework to contemplate ethical dilemmas and make informed decisions that insulate supervisors from compromising their liability while also supporting their supervisees and protecting clients from harm.
About the Presenter:
Kathryn Krase, Ph.D., J.D., M.S.W., Principal Consultant with Krase Consultant, is an expert on the professional ethics, and the intersection of ethics with legal responsibilities. She has years of experience consulting with government and community based organizations to develop policy & practice standards.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the ethical and legal responsibility of supervisors to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
- Identify ethical challenges unique to the role of supervising mental health professional.
- Apply a framework that prioritizes service to clients and support of supervisees
Agenda:
Introductions (5 minutes) The Role of Supervisors in Mental Health Practice (45 minutes) This section will focus on exploring the tasks and responsibilities of supervisors, with attention to identifying similarities and differences between those of supervisees. Evaluating Ethical Considerations for Supervisors (90 minutes) In this section, participants will be introduced to a framework that can be used to evaluate ethical and legal concerns. We will apply this framework to case examples relating to common concerns for supervisors. These case examples will explore: the assertion of expertise and authority; the challenges of supervising peers and friends; and cultural humility. Protecting Supervisors from Ethical & Legal Liability (30 minutes) This section will outline steps that supervisors can take to prevent ethical conundrums, and protect themselves from legal liability. Conclusions/Questions (10 minutes)
